Yeosu (‘Beautiful Waters' in Korea) is located southwest of the country in the province of Jeollanam-do (administrative region of Honam).
It is formed of a peninsula facing 317 islands (49 inhabited, 268 uninhabited). It has four bays: Gamangman Bay, Yeosuman Bay, Yeojaman Bay and Suncheon Bay which is and ecological and ornithological reserve classified RAMSAR.
Yeosu is strategically located in Korea Straight, at the crossroad of Sea of Japan, Oriental China Sea and Pacific Ocean. In the XVI Century (Joason Dynasty), the bay was the region's military flotilla headquarters.
The maritime (trades, fisheries, aquaculture) of the town (313,000 inhabitants) has an significant industrial tradition (heavy duty industries). It is also an important touristic region particularly valued by Chinese tourists (700,000 a year).
Associating environmental protection and economic development is very important for the local authority. That is the reason why Yesou was chosen in 2007 for the 2012 Universal Exposition under the theme: "The Living Ocean and Coast: Diversity of Resources and Sustainable Activities."
