SAN FRANCISCO BAY

38° N, 121° W - Pacific Ocean - Californian stream

San Francisco's bay is situated on the californian coast. It corresponds to a ditch of techtonic origin, which explains its great depths. The famous city of San Francisco and also several towns have been built all around.

The Golden Gate, which opens onto a large bay, is spanned by the famous Golden Gate Bridge which was constructed in 1937. Numerous smaller and better protected bays exist where wildife refuges have been established (Palo Alto Bay, San Pablo Bay, Richardson Bay). Two wellkown islands (Alcatraz, Angel Island) are today state parks.
