Exchange between schools in the Golfe du Morbihan and in the bay of Tadoussac

1 February 2009

On Friday 30 January at precisely 2.30 pm, due to the difference in times, young children from Brittany and Quebec were able to discuss live the ecosystems of their respective bays. The credit for this fine international initiative can be given to the teachers and “Université de Bretagne Sud” (South Brittany University) based in Vannes.

Questions came from all sides and were of all sorts: What do migratory birds eat when they come to Brittany in the Winter? After some thought the pupils replied: Eelgrass, which are semi-aquatic plants.

Another question, but regarding another matter: Does the melting ice have an effect on you? Yes, answered a young Tadoussac boy, because it changes salinity of the Saint Laurent and creates a eutrophication phenomenon which reduces the quantity of whales’ food and can affect them.

This ecological comparison was felt to be a wonderful experience on both sides of the Atlantic and further sessions have already been programmed.
